Hyaluronic Acid Might Actually Be Drying Out Your Skin

Hyaluronic acid is one of the most universally recommended skincare ingredients out there. It's in serums, moisturisers, eye creams, and sheet masks. Dermatologists love it. Beauty editors swear by it. And for good reason — when used correctly, it's one of the most effective hydrating ingredients available.

But there's a condition under which hyaluronic acid can actually make dryness worse. And most brands will never tell you what it is.


What Hyaluronic Acid Actually Does

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant — a type of ingredient that draws water molecules toward itself and holds onto them. It's remarkably effective at this. A single molecule of hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1,000 times its own weight in water, which is why it has a reputation for delivering an immediate plumping, hydrating effect.

The key word here is draws. Hyaluronic acid pulls water from whatever source is available. In the right conditions, that source is the air around you. In the wrong conditions, things get more complicated.


When It Works Exactly as Intended

In a humid environment — think Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, or a steamy bathroom right after a shower — hyaluronic acid performs brilliantly. It pulls moisture from the surrounding air and draws it into the upper layers of your skin, delivering genuine, lasting hydration.

This is the mechanism the marketing is based on, and in humid climates, it holds up.


When It Works Against You

Here's where the problem starts.

In a low humidity environment — an air-conditioned office, an airplane cabin, a dry climate — there isn't enough moisture in the surrounding air for hyaluronic acid to draw from. So it looks elsewhere. Specifically, it pulls water from the deeper layers of your own skin instead, drawing that moisture upward to the surface.

Once that moisture reaches the surface, it evaporates.

The result? You end up more dehydrated than you were before you applied the product. The hyaluronic acid has essentially acted as a pump, pulling your skin's own water reserves to the surface and releasing them into the air.

For anyone spending long hours in air-conditioned spaces — which, in Malaysia and Singapore, is most of us — this is a very real and very common problem.


The Fix Is Simple, But Timing Is Everything

The good news is that this issue is entirely preventable. The solution comes down to two things: application technique and a strict 60-second window.

Step 1: Apply to damp skin. Don't apply hyaluronic acid to dry skin. Instead, apply it immediately after cleansing while your skin is still slightly damp, or mist your face lightly with water first. This gives the humectant a local water source to work with, rather than drawing from deeper skin layers.

Step 2: Seal it within 60 seconds. This is the critical step most people skip. Follow immediately with a cream or facial oil that forms a barrier over the surface. This traps the moisture that hyaluronic acid has drawn to the skin before it has a chance to evaporate.

The window is short — you have roughly 60 seconds between applying your hyaluronic acid and sealing it in before the evaporation process begins.


A Better Version of Hyaluronic Acid

It's also worth knowing that not all hyaluronic acid is formulated the same way. Hyaluronic acid salts — such as sodium hyaluronate — are a refined form of the ingredient with a smaller molecular size, allowing them to penetrate more effectively and perform more reliably across different humidity levels.

If you've been using hyaluronic acid and not getting the results you expected, the formulation is worth looking at alongside your application method.


The Bottom Line

Hyaluronic acid is genuinely one of the best hydrating ingredients in skincare. But like most actives, it only delivers on its promise when used correctly. In low-humidity environments, the wrong application method turns one of your best tools into a source of the very problem you're trying to solve.

Damp skin. Seal within 60 seconds. That's the full protocol.
